“Oh, about two million in cut diamonds that they will have already traced back to The Golden Seagull and close to sixty million in uncut diamonds.”
He laughed one of those almost inaudible laughs. “That was rather generous of you.”
“You’re not going to run?” I asked. “I was hoping you’d run.”
“Where to? The only road out of here is the road to hell.” He walked towards the two figures, his hands slightly raised.
They escorted him out of the graveyard. I wondered if a similar fate awaited him in prison. I removed a black velvet bag from my pocket and emptied some of the contents into my hand. The diamonds laid heavy there. The landscape went on forever. The horizon shimmered in the distance. Heat blasted my face. If I could see far enough, maybe I could see all the way back to Malice Grove, but you can’t see all the way to hell.

Vincent Massaro studied writing and film at the University of Pittsburgh. Malice Times is his first novel. He was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where he currently resides with his wife and three children.
